Se existe algo que define a música no século XXI, é a mudança constante. Vivemos em uma era em que sua próxima música favorita pode vir de qualquer lugar — de todos os cantos do mapa estilístico, de todo o mundo. A experiência completa de ser um fã de música continua se transformando o tempo todo. Lá no bug do milênio, quando o ‘NSync lançou “Bye Bye Bye“, era o auge da era de comprar CDs, até que essa era deu adeus-adeus-adeus. O Napster aconteceu; assim como o MySpace e o iPod. O streaming chegou; o vinil voltou. Novos sons continuam sendo inventados, com o ar cheio de canções ecléticas e experimentais. Se você é um fã de música hoje em dia, tem um planeta inteiro de som na ponta dos dedos.

Esse é o espírito por trás da nossa lista das 250 maiores músicas do século XXI até agora. Como nossa lista dos maiores álbuns do século, é uma mistura diversificada de diferentes estilos, diferentes batidas, diferentes vozes. Algumas dessas músicas são hits universalmente amados; outras são clássicos de culto influentes. Mas esta lista se propõe a capturar toda a glória caótica da música do século XXI, uma canção por vez.

Estas canções vêm de todos os cantos do mapa. Só em nosso Top Dez, vamos de Estocolmo a Compton, da Music Row de Nashville aos bares de punk-rock decadentes de Nova York. Essas músicas vão de Seul à Espanha a San Juan, de Las Vegas a Veracruz a Versalhes, da Nigéria ao México à Colômbia. Há reggaeton e K-pop e drill e crunk, country e Afrobeats e emo e sierreño. Mas o critério para esta lista não é popularidade ou tempo de antena — estritamente brilhantismo musical e originalidade. De onde quer que venham essas músicas, elas nos lembram que estamos vivendo em um tempo de possibilidades abertas e inovação incessante. Algumas das megaestrelas mais famosas do nosso momento — Beyoncé, Taylor Swift, Kendrick Lamar — são também as mais aventureiras.

Algumas dessas músicas vêm de artistas lendários que conseguiram se manter vitais através das décadas, como David Bowie, Mary J. Blige, Madonna ou Bob Dylan. Outras vêm de adolescentes desajustados. Temos “Anthems for a 17-Year-Old Girl“; também temos “Drivers License“, um hino de uma garota de 17 anos. Temos a antiga essência country de Johnny Cash, que se despediu no ano em que Olivia Rodrigo nasceu. Temos one-hit wonders, além de gêneros inteiros que vieram e foram da noite para o dia. (Uma reverência para o nu metal cristão.) Há poesia torturada e confissões cruas. Há também aquela que diz: “Baby, you a song“.

Tivemos muitos debates enquanto montávamos esta lista — e aproveitamos cada minuto. É uma lista de músicas, não de artistas, então evitamos principalmente repetir várias canções do mesmo intérprete. Mas alguns gênios musicais tinham clássicos demais para negar. (Se o universo quer dar a Lorde tanto “Ribs” quanto “Green Light” na mesma carreira, você não pode dizer não.) Cada fã compilaria uma lista diferente — esse é o ponto. Mas esta lista resume uma era em que não há regras a seguir, nem manuais a obedecer. Ninguém fez esta lista jogando seguro.
